When the Virginia wine industry became popular in the late 1980's, it prompted
Dave Whittaker to take a grape growing course. Soon after he began
looking for land for a vineyard and in 1993 found a suitable location on
the banks of the Rappahannock river.
In the following year, he purchased the equipment needed to start a winery
and planted his own grapes. He also acquired an existing structure
to house the winery as well as his wine shop and tasting area, and renamed
it the "Grape Barn". In the summer of 1999, the fruition
of his dream became uncertain due to the difficulty of finding an
experienced winemaker.
As luck would have it, he was able to attract the interest of Chris
Pearmund, a well known and highly regarded winemaster. Together
they managed to create a "herd" of 8 wines, from dry to sweet,
using Dave's grapes, Seyval from Breaux Vineyards and Chardonnay from
Chris's Meriwether Vineyard. Their 1999 Inaugural Chardonnay &
Viognier both won gold medals at the 2000 Virginia State Fair.
Our surroundings include a shady two-tiered deck, overlooking a koi and
lilly filled pond, where guests can relax and soak up the ambience.
The surrounding area is dotted with picnic tables and rows of vines; a
wonderfully relaxed setting to enjoy a bottle of your favorite Unicorn
Wine.
